What Is 10 ppm Diesel, and Why Does the UAE Run on It?

Every truck, generator, excavator and forklift that keeps UAE business moving has one thing in common: it runs on diesel. But not all diesel is the same. The single number that matters most on a UAE diesel spec sheet is its sulphur content, and since July 2014 the legal standard for road and commercial use has been just 10 ppm.

In this guide, GoFuel explains what 10 ppm diesel actually is, how it compares with the other diesel grades you may come across in the UAE, and why it is the right fuel for your fleet, machinery and onsite tanks.

What does “10 ppm” mean?

“ppm” stands for parts per million. It measures how much sulphur is left in the fuel. 10 ppm diesel contains no more than 10 milligrams of sulphur in every kilogram of fuel, or 0.001%.

To put that in perspective, the diesel sold in the UAE before 2014 carried up to 500 ppm of sulphur. Some older regional supplies were far higher, in the thousands of ppm. Today’s 10 ppm grade has at least 98% less sulphur than the fuel it replaced.

10 ppm diesel is also known as:

  • ULSD (Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel)
  • Euro 5 diesel, after the European fuel standard that set the 10 ppm limit in 2009
  • EN 590 diesel, the European specification that also sets a minimum cetane number of 51 for good ignition quality
  • “Green diesel”, the name UAE fuel retailers used at launch

The sulphur is removed at the refinery through a process called hydrotreating, where hydrogen reacts with sulphur compounds and strips them out of the fuel.

Types of diesel you’ll find in the UAE

10 ppm ULSD is the only grade UAE businesses should be putting in their vehicles and on-land equipment. Here’s how it compares with the other diesel-type fuels in the market.

Fuel typeMax sulphurTypical useStatus for UAE businesses
10 ppm diesel (ULSD / EN 590)10 ppmTrucks, buses, cars, generators, construction and agricultural machineryThe national standard since 2014; sold at all ADNOC, ENOC and Emarat stations and by licensed suppliers
500 ppm diesel (old gasoil)500 ppmWas the UAE road diesel before 2014Replaced by 10 ppm for vehicles and commercial equipment; now mostly an export and industrial grade
Marine gas oil (MGO)0.5% (5,000 ppm) globally; 0.1% in emission control areasShips, dhows, marine enginesRegulated by international shipping (IMO) rules; not meant for land vehicles
Biodiesel blends (B5, B20, B100)Varies by base dieselSome fleets and pilots, made from used cooking oilA lower-carbon option; blends must still meet engine-maker approvals
Off-spec or unlicensed dieselUnknown, often highSold cheaply by unlicensed tradersIllegal and risky: can damage engines, void warranties and fail inspections

The lesson: a low price per litre can hide a high-sulphur or contaminated fuel. Always buy from a licensed supplier that can prove what’s in the tank.

Why the UAE made 10 ppm diesel mandatory

The UAE switched to 10 ppm diesel on 1 July 2014, becoming the first country in the Middle East to make ultra-low sulphur diesel compulsory. The change followed UAE Federal Cabinet Decision No. 37 of 2013 and updated fuel specifications from the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA, now part of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology). It required all commercial diesel vehicles and equipment to move from 500 ppm diesel to the 10 ppm Euro 5 grade.

ADNOC Distribution and ENOC rolled the new fuel out across their station networks that month. There were three main reasons behind the decision:

  1. Cleaner air in fast-growing cities. Sulphur in diesel burns into sulphur dioxide and fine particulate matter, both linked to respiratory illness. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah carry heavy truck, bus and construction traffic, so cutting sulphur at the pump has a direct effect on urban air quality.
  2. Keeping pace with modern engines. Vehicles built to Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards rely on diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and catalytic systems. High-sulphur fuel clogs and poisons these systems, so modern imported vehicles need 10 ppm diesel to run as designed.
  3. National sustainability goals. The move formed part of the UAE’s Green Economy Initiative and its long-term push to cut pollution and emissions across transport and industry.

Why 10 ppm diesel is the right choice for your business

Beyond compliance, 10 ppm diesel protects the equipment you’ve invested in.

  • Longer life for exhaust systems. DPFs and SCR catalysts on modern trucks and generators are expensive to replace. Low-sulphur fuel keeps them working and cuts down on forced regenerations and breakdowns.
  • Less corrosive wear. Sulphur forms acidic by-products during combustion that attack engine parts and degrade oil. Less sulphur means cleaner engines and more consistent oil-change intervals.
  • Warranty protection. Most vehicle and equipment makers specify EN 590 or equivalent fuel. Using off-spec diesel can void your warranty.
  • Lower emissions for ESG reporting. Cleaner fuel means less sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, which supports your company’s sustainability commitments and client tender requirements.
  • Hassle-free inspections. Fleets running compliant fuel avoid problems with emissions testing and regulatory checks.
  • A fair note on fuel economy: removing sulphur doesn’t make diesel more powerful. The refining process can slightly lower energy content and natural lubricity, so quality ULSD includes lubricity additives. The real payoff is lower maintenance costs and longer equipment life, not extra kilometres per litre.

Get genuine 10 ppm diesel delivered with GoFuel

When diesel arrives by truck, you need to trust what’s going into your tank. Before choosing a supplier, check that they:

  • Hold a valid UAE licence to trade and transport diesel
  • Supply branded diesel meeting EN 590 / 10 ppm specifications
  • Can share a certificate of analysis (quality certificate) for the fuel
  • Use calibrated, metered delivery so you pay only for litres received
  • Operate trained crews and safety-compliant tankers

Frequently asked questions

Is all diesel sold in the UAE 10 ppm?

All diesel at UAE fuel stations has been 10 ppm since July 2014. Diesel bought from unlicensed traders may not be, so always ask for a quality certificate.

Can I use 10 ppm diesel in older engines?

Yes. 10 ppm diesel works in older diesel engines as well as new ones. Quality ULSD contains lubricity additives to protect fuel pumps and injectors.

Is 10 ppm diesel the same as Euro 5 diesel?

Yes. In the UAE, 10 ppm diesel, ULSD, Euro 5 diesel and EN 590 diesel all refer to the same grade.

Does 10 ppm diesel improve mileage?

Not directly. Its main benefits are lower emissions, protection of exhaust after-treatment systems and less engine wear, which reduce maintenance costs over time.

Can GoFuel fill generators and onsite storage tanks? Yes. GoFuel delivers to fleets, generators, heavy machinery and onsite tanks of different capacities across the UAE.
